Mingtai Aluminum: Differences between 5052 and 3003 Aluminum Coil Sheet

As known to all, both 5052 and 3003 aluminum coil sheet boast excellent corrosion resistance, and their applications are confusingly crossed. Sometimes it’s really difficult to distinguish one from the other while choosing suitable raw materials. Here we have a simple introduction to differences between the two alloys by comparing 3003H24 and 5052H24.
First, they contain different chemical elements, because 3003 aluminum coil sheet contains aluminum and manganese, while 5052 contains aluminum and magnesium. The content of aluminum element is slightly more than that of 5052.
Second, they perform varied mechanical properties. The tensile strength of 3003H24 is 145 to 195Rm/MPa, while that of 5052H24 is as high as 230-280Rm/Mpa. The elongation strengths of the two are respectively 115Rm/MPa and 150Rm/MPa. Therefore, 5052 aluminum coil overshadows 3003 obviously in properties.
Third, in application 3003 aluminum coil sheet are mostly thin coil, but 5052 is applied as both thin and thick coils.
Fourth, the two differ in application scopes. 3003 aluminum coil sheet is mainly used to protect products against moisture. It can be used as packaging cover (as shown in Manufacturing Processes of 3003 Aluminum Coil), parts of fridges, air conditioners and cooling storage rooms, and air pipes etc. 5052, however, serves as usual raw material for housing of electronic products, pressure vessels, oil tanks and oil pipes of cars and planes etc. Fifth, 5052 is much more expensive than 3003, whose price is only slightly higher than industrial pure aluminum. Normally a ton of 5052 is around $400 more expensive than 3003 of similar specification. In spite of their common application as rust resistant aluminum coil, 3003 and 5052 differ from each other apparently, thus it’s vital for clients to choose suitable types in accordance to concrete application.
